On Wednesday, an actor became a real-life hero when he jumped into action to save a baby. Danny Trejo witnessed an accident and quickly assisted without even thinking about it.
In most of his films, Danny Trejo, 75, is usually the bad guy, however, this week he showed his true colors. The actor was driving when two cars collided and one of them flipped over in Sylmar, Los Angeles.
Instead of standing by or walking away, Trejo sprung into action in the area of Hubbard Street and Jackman Avenue. Speaking to reporters at the scene he said, “there was a baby inside and a grandma,” in the overturned car.
The action star tried pulling the young special-needs baby out after the grandmother pleaded that they save the boy but Trejo couldn’t because he was buckled in. Luckily a female bystander named Monica Johnson had rushed over to assist.
Johnson crawled in through the window to successfully unbuckle the seat belt. The “Machete” actor added: “I pulled the [trapped] baby out the other side.”
The star revealed that the accident was caused by one driver running a red light. Trejo took to Instagram to share a video about his heroic tale from the scene while he was being interviewed.
The other Good Samaritan who helped also shared her take on the incident. Speaking on camera the star stated: “The only thing that saved that little kid was that car seat — honest to God.”
The last piece of advice that the two heroes shared was: “Pay attention!” The pair hoped people would be more alert while driving to avoid such mishaps.
Los Angeles Police Department Public Information Officer Tony Im confirmed that the actor was indeed at the scene of the accident. Los Angeles Fire Department spokesperson Margaret Stewart shared that by the time emergency personnel was on the scene, the drivers and passengers had already exited their vehicles.
Firefighters had to use equipment to rescue the boy’s grandmother. In order to keep the little boy calm, Trejo kept him distracted and away from the accident.
The actor said:
“He was panicked. I said OK we have to use our superpowers. So he screamed ‘superpowers’ and we started yelling ‘superpowers.’ I said do this, with the muscles. He said ‘muscles.'”
Three people were taken to the hospital with no life-threatening injuries.
When Trejo isn’t helping to save other people’s lives, the star is running his businesses including Trejo’s Coffee & Donuts. The donut store opened in 2017 and is located at 6785 Santa Monica Blvd on the corner of Highland Ave.
The businessman also owns Trejo’s Tacos at 1048 S. La Brea Ave. and Trejo’s Cantina at 1556 N. Cahuenga Blvd.
