At the age of 90, Wanda found herself feeling isolated and lonely, a common experience for many elderly individuals who may have outlived their friends and lack family support. To combat her loneliness, Wanda took matters into her own hands and wrote a heartfelt note, which she placed on her neighbor Marleen Brooks’ door in San Francisco, California.
Wanda’s note read, “Would you consider becoming my friend? I’m 90 years old, live alone, all my friends have passed away. I’m so lonesome and scared. Please, I pray for someone.” Marleen and a friend visited Wanda the following evening and brought along cupcakes, an act of kindness that meant the world to Wanda.

Since sharing her story, Wanda’s letter has touched the hearts of hundreds of people on Facebook. Frank Somerville of KTVU News shared his thoughts on Wanda’s story, suggesting that others should follow Marleen’s example and reach out to lonely seniors in their communities. Marleen echoed this sentiment, encouraging others to make the effort to connect with isolated individuals and possibly make a new friend in the process.
Marleen’s kindness and compassion towards Wanda serves as a heartwarming reminder that small acts of kindness can make a significant difference in the lives of others, particularly the elderly who may be struggling with loneliness and isolation.
